South of France high on the agenda for British buyers

The South of France has long been popular with British holidaymakers and property buyers. A superb climate, the Mediterranean and delicious cuisine has resulted in many Brits buying retirement or holiday homes in France.

And, it seems that the popularity of the region shows no signs of diminishing. A leading estate agent reports that inquiries about property from Brits are well above 2011’s levels thanks to the weakness of the Euro and falling house prices. Three regions typically popular with Brits buying property in South of France
The Daily Telegraph reports that increasing numbers of Brits are looking for properties in the South of France ‘spurred on by an average five per cent fall in French holiday home prices; coupled with the effect of a weakening euro, prices have dropped overall by about 10 per cent.’
The newspaper reports that Brits normally choose one of three regions. The Luberon has increased in popularity since Peter Mayle’s book A Year in Provence and the area is favoured by buyers looking to immerse themselves in a traditional French way of life.
Twenty five minutes inland from Nice is the area of St Paul de Vence which is more remote and is home to lots of small, quiet villages.

Finally, Brits are drawn to the Cote d’Azur where your home is never more than a few minutes from a Hollywood celebrity or Russian oligarch. Locations such as Cannes, St Tropez and Monaco are havens for the rich and famous.

Wherever you’re looking to buy, there is increasing demand for homes. A recent survey by foreign exchange company HiFX shows France is twice as popular as Spain for Britons wanting to buy holiday homes, with the south of the country the most sought-after destination.
